The Stress-Sleep Cycle

Stress and sleep are closely connected. Stress causes your body to release hormones like cortisol, adrenaline and norepinephrine which keep you awake. And when you don't sleep, your body releases more of these hormones so you find it even harder to deal with stress.


It's a vicious cycle where stress stops you sleeping and poor sleep makes stress worse.

But the good news is that because they're so closely linked, addressing one often improves the other too.

+ How will sleeping better improve my health?

A sleep deficit is linked to many long-term health issues including obesity, poor immunity and mood disorders. Sleeping better will dramatically improve your energy, recovery, repair and immune systems, hormone balance and metabolism. It'll regulate your hunger and help with weight management and increase your reaction time to help you avoid accidents. You'll reduce stress, frustration, depression and anxiety, and improve your thinking, judgement and decision-making, attention span, memory, patience and ability to connect with others. You'll look better, be more creative and overall be happier and healthier. 

+ How much should I sleep?

Too much stress and not enough sleep can really damage your physical and mental health. On the other hand, sleeping too much can pose similar mental and physical health risks. Adults need 7-8 hours of sleep in order to perform at their best, and people who regularly sleep less than 4 hours or more than 9 function as if they were 9 years older than they are.

+ Why do I need coaching for sleep and stress management? Can't I just do it myself?

Maybe you believe you 'should' be able to sleep yourself - after all, it's natural isn't it? Surely your body should know what to do?


I expect you've tried lots of sleep hacks but let's face it, if they worked you wouldn't be here reading this. The fact is that sleep issues are complex and stem from physical and psychological causes. Left unchecked, stress becomes chronic and leads to many health problems including poor immunity, inflammation, weight gain, irritability, depression, depression, panic and anxiety disorders, cardiovascular damage, high blood pressure, memory problems, lack of focus, relationship problems and chronic digestive conditions. Many of these interfere with sleep and so the cycle continues as health deteriorates even further.
